Dealer Button:
A marker showing the player who is to be the last to receive cards and to make any
action in the round of play.
Blind Bets:
Bets, which have to be placed on the table before the players receive their cards. The
Small Blind is the player sitting directly to the left of the dealer button and the big blind is
the player directly to the left of the small blind.
Call:
Placing a bet equaling the current highest bet.
Raise:
Placing a bet equal to the highest bet, then adding more to become the highest bet.
Players must state their intentions before raising by saying, "raise," or in the limit game,
place the call and raise the bet on the table together in one motion.
Check:
This allows the player to stay in the game without calling or raising; however, this may
only be done if no one has placed a bet in the round of play.
Fold:
By folding (throwing away) his/her cards, the player forfeits any bets on the table and
any chance to win.
String Bet:
When a player places a call or raises a bet on the table and then adds another amount
to it. String betting is not allowed in Casino Royale.
Pot:
The chips collected by the dealer at the end of each betting round will be placed in the
middle of the table and will be referred to as the pot. Players still in the hand will have
the opportunity to win all or part of this pot.
All In:
A player can only go "all in" in a limit game if he/she doesn't have enough chips to raise
or to match the previous call. In a no-limit game, players may go "all in" at any time
when it is their turn to act.
Rake:
Casino Royale will take a 10% commission on all pots up to $5 USD on 1/2, 2/4 and
3/6 games; $10 USD on 5/10 games and up to $15 USD on higher-stake and no-limit
games. In a round of play where the flop doesn't get dealt, no commission will be taken.
Table Stake/Buy In:
The amount that the player has to have in front of him/her when sitting down to the table.
In limit games, the minimum buy-in is 10 times the maximum bet (i.e., $60 USD in a 3/6
game, $100 USD in a 5/10 game, etc.) In a 2/5 no-limit game, the minimum buy-in is
$200 USD and the maximum $500 USD, or the highest chip count on the table. No
buy-ins or bringing fresh chips to the table during a hand.
The aim of Texas Hold 'Em Poker is to get the highest-ranking five-card hand out of the
seven available cards (2 hole cards and 5 community cards). Players have to be seated
at the table to receive cards. Except for the first hand of a new game, each new coming
player will have to post a big blind in the first hand to be able to participate in the game.
At the beginning of a round of play, the dealer will determine the position of the dealer
button by dealing one card face up to each player. The first person with the highest card
will then receive the button. The player to the left of the button will place a small blind
and the next player a big blind. Every player will then receive two cards face down (these
are called the hole cards) and the first round of betting will begin.
The first person to act will be the player sitting to the left of the big blind. His/her options
will be to call, raise or fold. The opportunity to act will come to each player in a clockwise
direction. When the betting is finished, the dealer will collect the bets and place them in
the middle of the table (this will be the pot). He will then burn a card and flip up 3 cards
(the flop). Another betting round will follow this in which the first player to act will be the
person sitting to the left of the button (small blind). His/her options will be to check, bet
or fold. When the betting is finished, the dealer will burn another card and flip up a 4th
community card (the turn). The third betting round follows this, after which the dealer will
burn another card and show the 5th community card (the river). After this comes the
final betting round. The players still in the game will then have to show their cards to
determine the winner.
The first player to show his/her cards is the player who had the last action (bet or raise)
or if there was no action, the player in the dealer button position. If the player in the
button position is not in the game, it will be the next player to the left of the button.
Players can use two, one or none of their hole cards to obtain the highest-ranking
five-card total.
Limit Texas Hold 'Em
In this game, the small blind is half of the table minimum, and the big blind is the table
minimum (i.e. $2 USD and $5 USD in 5/10 games). Players can only bet and raise in
units of the table minimum in the 1st and 2nd betting rounds and in units of the table
maximum in the 3rd and 4th rounds. There are only three raises per round. The raise
has to be announced or placed on the table together with the call in one motion. If the
player places more than the required amount on the table (higher-value chip or more
chips) and hasn't announced, "raise," the dealer will take the bet as a call.
2/5 No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em
In 2/5 No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em the small blind is $2 USD and the big blind is $5 USD.
The minimum bet at the start of each betting round is the big blind ($5 USD), and the
minimum raise is the big blind or if there has been another raise, a raise equivalent to
or higher than that. Raises have to be announced at all times, otherwise any bet will be
taken as a call.
